After archiving a chat and then returning it to the main list, many people will think that the archive is invalid; if they still receive a reminder after putting a channel into a folder, they will think that the folder is useless. In fact, the three functions control different levels: archiving changes where the chat is placed, muting determines whether it reminds you, and the folder determines which view you view it from.
It is more effective to distinguish these three things first and then combine the settings than to keep moving the same channel around.
Understand the differences with one table

Three operations can act on a channel at the same time. For example, mute and archive high-frequency news channels, and put them into the “Evening Reading” folder at the same time: the main list will be clear during the day, and you can still view it from the dedicated tab at night.
Why archived chats return to the main list
Telegram officially wrote in the archive function description: Archived chats may return to the main list when receiving new notifications; muted archived chats will remain in the archive. Subsequent versions also expanded archiving and notification options, and behaviors such as mentions and replies may still be affected by specific settings.
So “archiving and reappearing” is often not a data error, but rather the chat is still unmuted and new messages have been received. First open the chat’s notification settings to confirm whether it is muted, how long it will be muted, and how mentions and custom exceptions are handled.
If the goal is to never watch this channel, the correct action may be to exit the channel rather than archive it indefinitely. Before exiting, confirm whether you still need to access private history or invitation qualifications in the future.
Mute is not read or hidden
Mute only controls the reminder method. Messages will still arrive, and how the unread count and chat sorting are displayed depends on folder rules, archive status, and client settings. After you mute a channel, it may still appear at the top of the list because of new messages, but it will not emit sounds or system notifications.
Telegram supports muting for custom durations and also allows setting notification sounds and exceptions for specific chats. Temporary event channels can be muted until the end of the event; long-term information sources can be muted continuously and put into fixed reading folders. Don’t mute all chats across the board, or even truly urgent personal conversations will be drowned out.
Why can’t folders replace mute?
Folders are just filter views. Even if a work group only appears in the “Work” tab, notifications will still be triggered according to the group’s own settings; conversely, a muted channel can continue to appear in the “Unread” or “Channel” folders, unless the rules explicitly exclude muted or read chats.
Folders are particularly useful for controlling reading sessions. You can pin only contacts to the top of the “All” view and five primary sources to the top of the “Channel Reading” view. When switching tabs, focus on the task, not the latest message.
How to set up four common scenarios
High frequency news channel
To mute it for a long time, add it to the “News” folder; whether to archive it or not depends on whether you still want to see it in the main list. Check once a day at a fixed time. Reminders of major events can be given to a few trusted primary sources, rather than being pushed by dozens of forwarding channels at the same time.
Temporary activity group
Put it into the project folder during the event, and keep the mention notification if necessary; archive it after the event, and confirm that the history and contacts are no longer needed before exiting. This way you won’t miss changes on the day of the event, and you won’t have a temporary group permanently occupying the homepage.
Work Group
Don’t turn on the sound all by just the word “work”. The core group retains reminders, the announcement group is muted but placed in the “Reply Required” or “Work” folder, and low-priority bots are muted individually. Rules should align with action responsibilities, not chat names.
Private conversation
If you don’t want to deal with it at the moment, you can file it or set it to mute for a short time, but it’s best to avoid using categorization techniques to avoid things that really need to be responded to. Move messages with clear deadlines to favorites and set reminders, and separate chat organization and task management.
Do a behavioral test after setting up
Select an unimportant test group or channel and record the current archive, mute and folder status; let new messages arrive and observe what happens to the main list, archives, folders, badges and system notifications respectively. Change another option and retest.
Only change one variable at a time during testing. If you archive, mute, exclude unread, and turn off system permissions at the same time, it’s hard to know which setting has the effect. System-level notification permissions will also override in-app settings: being allowed in Telegram does not mean that the operating system will definitely allow it.
The relationship between search and archiving
Archiving is not deletion. Under normal circumstances, cloud chats and messages that the account still has access to can be found from the corresponding chat, archive list or search portal. Folder exclusion is also not equivalent to removal from the search index.
But global search is not a guarantee of “showing all archive history”. Deleted messages, lost private chats, Secret Chats, or filtered results are still subject to their respective boundaries. If you want to find old news from a certain channel, it is more stable to search within the channel.
A long-term maintainable combination
Chats can be divided into three levels: conversations that require timely action are left in the main list and notified discreetly; channels that need to be read regularly are muted and put into folders; chats that are not used temporarily but may be reviewed are archived. Clean up temporary projects and dead channels once a month.
The purpose of this setting is not to pursue “zero unread”, but to match reminders with responsibilities and make reading an active choice.
FAQ
Will archiving delete messages?
No, archiving only changes the list where the chat is located. Deleting a chat, clearing history, or leaving a channel are separate actions, and the confirmation box is worded differently.
Will the other party know after muting?
Mute is the notification selection for your local account, and usually no notification will be sent to the other party. It also doesn’t prevent the other person from continuing to message.
Why are there still read or muted chats in the folder?
Check if folders are automatically included by chat type and if there are any exceptions for manual inclusion. Combinations of rules may keep a chat alive; testing with several specific objects is more reliable than just looking at the rule name.
