Telegram Takes Up Too Much Space: A Guide to Safely Clearing Cache and Adjusting Storage Settings

Telegram’s space is growing rapidly, often not with text messages but with channel videos, group pictures, voices, and repeatedly downloaded files. The core of the security process is to first distinguish between “local cache” and “cloud chat”: clearing the cache is used to remove re-downloadable copies on the device, while deleting chats or accounts is a completely different and higher-risk operation.

Don’t click directly on “Clear Data” when you see the system storage page. Start by looking at the composition from Telegram’s own Storage Usage, which usually allows for a more precise cleanup by type and chat.

Read the entire confirmation text before executing, especially do not mistake “Clear Storage/Data” in Android system for “Clear Cache” in Telegram.

First check who occupies the space

Go to Data and Storage in Telegram settings and open Storage Usage. Current clients typically show total usage, broken down by media like photos, videos, files, music, voice, etc. or by chat. Entry-point names and graphics will change depending on the platform.

Find the largest items first instead of cleaning evenly. A channel that automatically downloads HD videos may take up most of the space; deleting hundreds of lines of text has no practical effect. Click on a specific chat to view the types that can be cleaned, and keep the work files that still need to be used offline.

The application size displayed by the mobile phone system may also include the program itself, database, temporary files and copies you save to Downloads/Files/Photo Library, so it may not be completely consistent with the statistics in Telegram.

How to clear the cache to make it more stable

Select Clear Cache or a similar entry in Storage Usage and confirm the scope by media type and chat. For the first time, only clear the video of a non-critical channel. Return to the chat to check: the message bubble is usually still there. When you click on the video again, you need to connect to the Internet to download it.

Expand after confirming that it meets expectations. Before traveling, when the network is limited, or when materials need to be presented on-site, save the necessary files to a controlled directory and test whether they can be opened offline. Don’t take “theoretically re-downloadable” as meaning that it can be accessed at any time. The original message may be deleted or the permissions may change in the future.

After clearing, check the system space again. Some operating systems will not refresh the statistics immediately. You can just restart the application or wait for the system to recalculate. There is no need to click continuously.

Set up automatic cache removal

Telegram offers storage options such as Keep Media, maximum cache size, or automatic removal of media that has not been accessed for a while, with the exact combination varying by platform and version. They typically only manage local copies of media and do not automatically delete messages in cloud chats.

It can be set according to the purpose of the device: small-capacity mobile phones will be retained for a shorter time, and commonly used desktop computers will be retained for a longer time; exceptions will be made for work channels or important chat settings. Observe it for a week after setting it up to confirm that frequently viewed files are not downloaded repeatedly every day, and there is no abnormal increase in mobile data.

Control automatic downloads to avoid filling up again quickly

Check automatic media downloads under mobile network, Wi-Fi and roaming separately in Data and Storage. Videos and large files are most worth limiting; photos can be determined based on traffic and usage habits. Turning off automatic downloading will not exit the channel, nor will it prevent text messages from arriving, but the media requires you to manually click on it.

For channels that post a lot of videos every day, they can be muted at the same time and placed in the reading folder. Opening it when you really need it can reduce storage, traffic and attention consumption at the same time. If the channel has no value, exiting is more straightforward than constantly clearing the cache.

Be cautious with Secret Chats and local only content

Telegram FAQ differentiates between Cloud Chats and Secret Chats: Secret Chats use end-to-end encryption, are bound to the device where they were created, and are not synced in the Telegram cloud history of other devices. Signing out will lose Secret Chats on that device.

Therefore, before preparing to clear app data, uninstall or exit, first confirm whether there are Secret Chats that need to be processed and local data that you have the right to retain. Don’t assume that logging back in will restore everything. The re-downloadable media of ordinary cloud chats is still subject to message persistence and account access rights.

Where do the files go after clearing the cache?
