Guide to Exporting Telegram Chat History: HTML, JSON, and Media Files

Explain how to export all data or individual chat histories using Telegram Desktop, clearly detailing the HTML, JSON, and media options, date ranges, file locations, and privacy risks, and specify which content cannot…

Telegram chat history can be exported, but the official entrance is mainly on Telegram Desktop, not the ordinary sharing menu on the mobile phone. You can export a set of cloud data in your account, or just export a chat, and select HTML, JSON, and the media you want to download.

Answer two questions before you start: whether the export is for people to read or for processing by a program; which chats, dates and attachments do you really need. The larger the scope, the longer the wait, and the higher the privacy risk.

What can export solve and what cannot?

Scenarios suitable for export include: reading a chat offline; saving project records that you have the right to keep; finding a large number of historical messages; organizing personal collections locally; and generating a point-in-time copy for compliance or migration needs.

Export is not a be-all and end-all to “recover all Telegram history”. It can only process data that the account has access to when exporting, that the client can obtain, and that you select into the scope. Deleted messages, content that has never been synced to the current account, inaccessible private channels, and device-specific Secret Chats will not reappear by clicking Export.

Exporting a copy will also not automatically follow subsequent edits and deletions. After the file is written to disk, it becomes static data that needs to be protected and managed by yourself.

Two official export entrances

Export account data

Open Settings in Telegram Desktop, go to Advanced, and look for Export Telegram Data. Here you can usually choose account information, contacts, personal chats, groups, channels, robots, and categories such as photos, videos, voices, files, etc. The actual names and order are subject to the current version.

This method is suitable for a wide range of personal backups or audits. Don’t make a habit of selecting all: If you only need ten documents in your Saved Messages, there’s no need to copy all the private chats and large videos together.

Export a single chat

Open the target chat and look for Export chat history in the More menu. Select a date range, media type, maximum file size, and format, then start exporting. Options may differ for channels, groups, and private chats, and your permissions may affect what is visible.

When working with only one research channel, single-chat export makes it easier to check boundaries and reduces irrelevant personal information entering the folder. For third-party or team data, you should confirm that you have the right to save and process it in this way before exporting it.

Which one should I choose between HTML and JSON?

HTML is suitable for reading directly with a browser. It generates navigable pages and media folders that open to near-human-readable chat transcripts. If you want to review, print or search manually every day, HTML is preferred.

JSON is structured data and is more suitable for local scripts, statistics, migration or self-built retrieval. It preserves fields and nested relationships, but does not guarantee that all fields will be as intuitive as the interface. JSON is not synonymous with “more complete”, nor should it be uploaded directly to any online tool just because it is machine-readable.

If the purpose has not yet been determined and the storage space allows, you can export one copy separately; a more prudent approach is to test with a small date range first to check whether the two results contain the fields you really need.

For a complete comparison, see Telegram export, choose HTML or JSON.

How to choose media and file size

Photos, videos, voices, and documents usually take up most of the space. When searching only for text, you can not export large media first, or set a reasonable upper limit on file size; when you need to retain research evidence, you can then check attachments according to the actual type.

The media is not downloaded and there may still be file name, type or placeholder information in the message, but the content cannot be opened offline. Selecting all videos, in turn, can take an export from minutes to hours and quickly fill up your disk.

First check the size of the target chat and the available space on the local machine. Keep Telegram Desktop online during the export process and don’t put your computer to sleep; check the output directory and logs when complete instead of just seeing “Complete” and assuming all attachments were successful.

Select a non-sensitive chat and seven-day date range and check separately:

  1. Whether the message time and time zone are as expected;
  2. How to indicate editing tags, replies, forwarding sources and links;
  3. Whether Chinese, emoticons, codes and links are displayed normally;
  4. Can the selected pictures or files be opened offline;
  5. Search whether a known message can be hit;
  6. Whether other chats are mixed in the output directory.

After the small sample is passed, the scope will be expanded. This way you can catch the wrong format, date or media limit in real time instead of having to export again hours later.

Why can’t I see the export button?

First make sure you are using the official Telegram Desktop, not the mobile version, web version, or a third-party client with a similar name; then update to the current stable version. Official support records also indicate that there may be functional differences between some platform distribution versions and the directly downloaded Desktop version.

If you have just logged in to a new device, Telegram may restrict immediate export for security reasons and send a prompt on the existing device. Do not wait to install unknown modifications just to bypass them. Check the specific information given by the official client, and keep the account’s active mobile phone number and security verification method.

Security processing after export is completed

The export directory may contain private messages, contacts, geolocations, files, group names, and links that can be opened directly. At least do:

  • Save to a controlled local directory or encrypted disk;
  • Do not put into public synchronization disk, website warehouse or chat attachments;
  • Delete irrelevant chat and personal information before sharing;
  • Record the export account, scope, time and purpose;
  • Safely delete copies and temporary archives after the retention period is reached.

Opening external links in HTML may still lead to network access, and offline files do not automatically become trusted content. Continue to use system security checks for unknown attachments and do not run suspicious programs.

Export and Telegram content permissions

Being able to technically export does not mean that you can publish other people’s content to the public, aggregate it in batches, or use it for AI. Telegram’s current content license terms have additional restrictions on scraping, indexing, aggregation, and AI use; chat participants, channel authors, employers, and local laws may also impose obligations.

Personal review and external reuse are not the same scenario. Before handing it over to external analysis tools, narrow it down to the necessary channels and times, and confirm authorization, storage location, retention period, and deletion process.

FAQ

Can the complete chat history be exported directly from the mobile phone?

The official complete export portal is mainly Telegram Desktop. Sharing, saving to file or copying on mobile phone can only process the selected content and cannot be equivalent to exporting chat history on Desktop.

Can I re-import into Telegram after exporting?

Do not understand the exported file as a Telegram backup package that can be restored with one click. HTML and JSON are mainly used for viewing or processing. The official chat migration function and export are different processes.

Can the export include deleted messages?

Exports generally cannot be expected to restore messages that are no longer in the currently accessible history at the time of export. It is another fact that the old local copy once held the content, but must also be handled according to permissions and retention rules.
