Copying the channel homepage link can only take people to the channel, and copying a single message link can locate specific posts. This distinction is important when doing research citations, sharing event announcements, or checking AI summaries: without message-level links, recipients still have to dig through thousands of entries in history.
However, “the link can be copied” and “others can open it” are two different things. Public channel messages can generally be opened by anyone with access; private channels, internal groups, comments, and topic links will continue to check account membership and message status.
Copy a single message link on mobile and desktop
Find the target message in the channel, long press (mobile) or right-click (Desktop) on the message, and look for “Copy Link”, “Copy Message Link” or similar menu items. Some clients will put it in the share menu. Copy and paste into your Saved Messages first, making sure the link points to the target message and not the channel homepage.
If the menu only has “Forward” but not “Copy Link”, check the following:
- Whether the current object is really a channel or a group that supports message linking;
- Did you click on the text area of the message, or on the picture, button or number of comments;
- Whether the channel has content protection enabled and restrictions on saving and forwarding;
- Whether the official client is the current version;
- Whether you have permission to view or manage the message.
The interface entrance will change with the platform, and it is not recommended to judge that the function does not exist based on an old screenshot.
What does the public channel message link look like?
For channels with public usernames, the message link usually looks like this:
https://t.me/examplechannel/1234
examplechannel is the public username and 1234 is the message ID. Links should not be handwritten by display name alone, as usernames may contain underscores, numbers, or may have been changed. Copying directly from the official client is the most reliable.
Public links make it easier to verify the source, but are not guaranteed to be permanently valid. Channels may change usernames and become private, messages may be deleted, and access may be restricted on your network. When saving evidence, also record the channel name, username, sending time, brief preview and verification date.
Why does the private chat link contain /c/?
Private channels or internal message links of some non-public chats are often in the form of t.me/c/.../.... It is not a public invitation link, and the number inside is not a username for strangers to search for the channel. The recipient usually must have joined the corresponding chat and opened it with a authorized Telegram account.
Sending a private message link to someone who hasn’t joined will not automatically grant access. The other party needs a valid invitation method provided by the administrator, and whether you can see the history after joining depends on the chat type and current settings. Do not change internal message links into so-called “bypass privacy restrictions” addresses.
The private channel invitation link and the message link have different purposes: the invitation link is responsible for requesting or obtaining membership, and the message link is responsible for locating content within the scope of existing permissions. Don’t interchange the two.
Links to comments, discussion groups, and original channel posts
Channel comments usually rely on associated discussion groups. After clicking the comment number to enter the discussion, the copied link may locate the comment thread or discussion group message instead of the original channel post. Telegram’s official deep link model has different parameters and structures for comments, topics, and specific messages.
When quoting externally, first decide what you want to prove: if you cite the announcement itself, copy the channel’s original post; if you quote a user comment, copy the comment link, and indicate that this is discussion content rather than a channel statement. If the recipient only sees the original post but cannot find the comments, it may be due to differences in discussion group permissions, comment deletion, or client redirection.

Seven reasons why others cannot open the link
- The other party has not joined the private channel or associated discussion group.
- The invitation application is still pending approval, and message access rights have not yet been established.
- The message has been deleted, or the channel administrator has restricted content saving and sharing.
- The channel’s public username changes and the old path becomes invalid.
- The link points to a comment, topic or media time point, and the client does not support the same jump.
- The other party opened the browser preview, and the Telegram account logged in was not an authorized account.
- The link was cut off during copying, typesetting or chat software, and there were extra periods or brackets.
When troubleshooting, first ask the sender to open the same link in another official client, and then ask the recipient to confirm the account and membership. Don’t ask the other party to “prove permission” by sending verification codes, session files, or screenshots of sensitive chats.
How message links are used for reliable referencing
A usable quote includes at least the channel identity, message time, a brief content description, and a link. Public events should also be linked to primary sources such as the organization’s official website, announcements or documents; Telegram posts can only prove what the channel has posted, but do not automatically prove the authenticity of the content.
For private sources, do not put links into public articles. Even if readers cannot open it, the link path may expose internal chat relationships. Confirm member permissions when using it within the team, and avoid being scattered in work orders, public logs, or analysis platforms for a long time.
After the message is edited, the link may still point to the same message identity, but the text has changed. When it comes to financial, recruiting, dating, or security judgments, record the time of the reconciliation and open context for subsequent corrections, rather than just forwarding an isolated screenshot.
What does source link mean in asktele
The message provenance of asktele is used to bring the answer back to the specific basis of the selected channel. Source links do not extend access; opening them depends on the user’s access to Telegram and whether the original message is still available.
Each question currently targets a selected broadcast channel, rather than searching across the entire Telegram. The value of message links is to shorten the verification path, not to add decoration to unsourced summaries.
FAQ
Will the channel administrator be notified when copying a link?
Ordinary copy actions are usually only client operations and are not equivalent to forwarding or sending messages. Specific content protection and auditing requirements still depend on chat rules and organizational policies.
Can I tell from the link whether the channel is public?
Exposed username paths and /c/ internal paths provide clues, but don’t rely on strings alone to determine the current permission status. Verify directly in the unlogged browser and authorized account respectively, and the channel information shall prevail.
Can message links be permanently used as evidence?
Not guaranteed. Messages can be edited or deleted, and channels can be renamed or have their visibility changed. Important quotes should be documented with time and context and rechecked before publishing.
