Telegram Hashtag search has two commonly confused scopes: looking for a #hashtag in the current channel or chat, and clicking on a hashtag to view global public posts from large public channels. The former helps organize known sources, and the latter is used to discover a subset of publicly available content.
Telegram officially states that global Hashtag searches do not display private chat messages. It is also not a complete index of all public channels and all historical posts.
Let’s first look at the differences between the two Hashtag searches.
| Scope | Suitable for the task | What can be seen | What cannot be inferred |
|---|---|---|---|
| In the current channel | Find historical posts of the same tag in this channel | Matching channel messages that the current account has access to | No relevant content in other channels |
| General search across own chats | Check tags in chats that have been added | Messages returned by the current account search context | Complete results across Telegram platforms |
| Global public Hashtag | Discover public posts from large public channels | Public results currently returned by the platform | All public channels, all history and private content |
First decide whether the goal is to “organize a channel” or “discover external public posts.” The entrances are different and the resulting quantities cannot be directly compared.
How to search for Hashtag within a channel
- Open the target channel and confirm the name,
@usernameand access rights. - Open the search within the channel and enter the complete tag including
#, for example#projectupdate. - If the results are multiple, add the date range, or view the previous and later messages.
- Try the case, language, hyphen, and underscore variations, but change only one at a time.
- Open the specific message and confirm that the tag is the subject of the text and not an irrelevant word in a forward or quote.
Clicking on the Hashtag in the channel message may also lead to the tag results provided by the current client. On the interface, you should pay attention to whether this chat, your own chat, or Public Posts are currently displayed.
How to use global public Hashtag search
Telegram explained in the official 2024 update that you can click on the Hashtag in any chat to see results from large public channels; public posts can be viewed in the stream or compact list. Private chat messages will not be displayed.
Practical process:
- Click the target Hashtag from a message, or use the public tag entrance provided by the current client;
- Check the scope label on the results page to confirm that it is not still locked in the current channel;
- Record the source channel and release time for each result;
- Enter the source channel to check the context, identity and subsequent corrections;
- Do not regard the total number of results as the total amount of public discussion.
Entry-point names, account visibility, and display may vary by client and version. The official blog describes product capabilities and does not mean that all devices will always have the same button location.
Why global Hashtag search is not “Full Telegram search”
The official description uses the scope of “large public channels” and private chats are explicitly excluded. The official channels.searchPosts method also has fields related to pagination, frequency, free search slots or paid controls.
Therefore:
- Zero results do not prove that there are no relevant public posts;
- A tag from a small public channel may not enter the global results;
- Account, client and current restrictions will affect visible entries;
- Post editing, deletion or channel status changes will affect the results;
- Public results can help with discovery, but they do not automatically authorize external bulk collection.
Why does the label writing method miss results?
#AI_News, #ainews, #AInews and the ordinary text “AI news” are different expressions. Channel administrators may also change the tag system or use tags only on some posts.
When checking:
- Try using
#and ordinary keywords respectively; - Check underline, numbers, singular and plural and language;
- Copy the original tag from a known message instead of typing it in from memory;
- Search for channel names or keywords, then look at the actual tags after finding the post;
- Don’t interpret missing tags as absence of content.
Hashtag is an organizational signal actively added by the author, not an automatic topic classification. Older posts without tags still require keyword, date, and media filtering.
How to use Hashtag for event tracking
First, check the tags in trusted primary channels to determine the actual writing method used by the project team; then use public Hashtags to discover other public sources; finally, sort by message time and distinguish between originals, reposts, and comments.
The same hashtag may be used for marketing, hot spots, or projects with the same name. Channel identity, context, and external links must be checked, and trending conclusions cannot be drawn simply by aggregating by tags.
How channel operators design tag systems
Stable tags should solve long-term retrieval problems, rather than creating new ones for every article:
- Use a small number of main tags for fixed content types such as announcements, updates, events, recruitment, etc.;
- Avoid frequent changes in capitalization, underlining and languages for the same concept;
- Explain the purpose of tags in the pinned index;
- Still write the title and date clearly next to the label, and do not let the label replace the main text;
- Keep the transition instructions from the old label to the new label during the revision.
The tag system can improve the efficiency of native search and also allow subsequent keyword searches in the channel knowledge base to retain a clear structure.
Hashtag and asktele
asktele can look for specific Hashtags in a selected broadcast channel and can also accept natural language questions around related topics. It does not search any public channel by global hashtag, nor does it automatically merge results across multiple sources.
When you need to quote, you should still open the source of the message and confirm the label context. An AI-generated summary cannot turn popular tags into verified trends.
Use an observation table to compare label results
When doing event research, you can record: the original writing method of the tag, search entry, execution date, result channel, message time, originality or forwarding, external link source, whether the topic has the same name, subsequent corrections and current accessibility status.
This prevents “the same tag appears many times” from being mistaken for “confirmed by many independent sources”. Multiple channels may copy the same post, and marketing accounts may borrow popular tags. After deduplication, you should still go back to the primary channel, the official website of the organization, or the original document for verification.
Differences in the use of three common tags
Project or brand tag
First confirm the exact writing method from the official channel, and then search for ordinary text, ticker and old brand name. Counterfeit projects may use the exact same tags, so each result must be checked against @username, the contract, or the official website.
Events and City Tags
Tags may describe the theme of the event but not the actual date or location. Open the text to confirm the event time, registration deadline and organizer; even if expired posters can still be found, they are not currently valid events.
News event tags
Different spellings, translations, and abbreviations are used for the same event in different languages. Search separately and build a timeline of sources, don’t assume the platform automatically translates, and don’t sort by results to infer the earliest publisher.
Minimal experiment when label has zero results
First find a message that is currently visible and does contain the tag, and copy the complete tag from the body. Search within the current channel; switch to the public post entrance after hitting the target. If there are results in the channel but not in the public entrance, it means the coverage is different, not that the tag does not exist.
If there are no results in the channel, separately test removing #, underline variations and normal keywords, and clear the date or media filters. Only change one condition at a time and record which writing method can hit.
Don’t use Hashtag results to make these conclusions
- Do not use result counts to estimate discussion volume across all of Telegram;
- Do not interpret top ranking as the earliest, most authoritative or most supported;
- Do not infer from zero results that the private channel has no relevant content;
- Do not automatically assign tags with the same name to the same project, person or event;
- Posts can be crawled in batches, republished, or handed over to external AI by default just because they are public.
Hashtag Search FAQ
Will label case affect the results?
Specific matching behavior may vary from portal to portal. A more rigorous approach would be to copy the writing from known messages and test case, underline, and language variations separately, rather than relying on a single rule.
Can there be spaces in the middle of Chinese tags?
Spaces usually separate the label from the following text. Channels should be observed to actually use full clickable tags while supplementing searches with common Chinese phrases.
Can I subscribe to all new posts of a Hashtag?
This article checks search and public post discovery, and does not describe it as an exhaustive platform-wide tag subscription. When monitoring is required, reliable channels should be selected and the scope of authorization should be clearly defined.
