How to Use Similar Channels to Find Similar Telegram Channels and Filter for Quality

Use Telegram Similar Channels from a known channel to discover related public channels, explain the recommendation logic and coverage limitations, and filter candidates by username, source, and historical content.

When you’ve found a valuable Telegram channel but don’t know the exact name of similar sources, Similar Channels is better for discovery than constantly guessing keywords. Telegram official description: After joining a channel, you can see similar public channels, or you can access the entrance from the channel profile page; candidates are automatically selected based on the similarity of the subscriber group.

This function only solves “what other public channels have similar audiences” and does not answer “which one is the most authoritative”, “whether the content is authentic” or “whether it is suitable to join”. Manual screening is still required after recommendation.

What Similar Channels can do

Can do Can’t promise
Expand from a known channel to related public channels Cover all related channels on Telegram
Discover candidates using subscriber base similarities Accurately understand the topics and language of each channel
Reduce the number of guesses on names and keywords Prove that the channel is official, safe or the content is reliable
Provide a new discovery entrance for the source list Automatically remove copy accounts, marketing accounts and fraudulent channels

The official description clearly states that only public channels appear in the Similar Channels list. Private channels will not be exposed just because they are similar to a public channel’s audience.

How to open Similar Channels

The name and position of the button will change in different client versions. There are two types of stable paths:

  1. After joining a channel, check the similar channel suggestions displayed by Telegram;
  2. Open the channel profile page and look for Similar Channels, similar channels or equivalent entries.

If there is no entrance to the current client, do not blindly rely on old screenshots. First update the official client, check whether the channel is a public channel, and then verify it on another official client. The existence of a certain capability in the API or official blog does not mean that each account and client will always display the same button.

Telegram uses subscriber group similarity rather than manual classification by editors. The audiences of the two channels overlap, which may be due to similar topics, the same marketing network, language region, cross-promotion, or users paying attention to opposite viewpoints at the same time.

Therefore, similar results may appear:

  • Different segmented topics in the same industry;
  • Aggregated channels from original sources and massive reposts;
  • Official and unofficial communities of the same brand;
  • Channels with different languages but overlapping audiences;
  • Channels with opposite positions but followed by the same researchers;
  • Channels with similar names but whose identities cannot be confirmed.

Don’t treat the recommendation order as a quality ranking, and don’t write “platform recommendation” as Telegram’s endorsement of the content.

Create a candidate channel list in six steps

Step 1: Choose a reliable seed channel

The clearer the seed channel, the easier the candidate is to interpret. Prioritize public channels where you have verified the username and official source, the topic is stable, and updates are ongoing. An aggregation channel that mixes more than a dozen topics will bring more complex recommendations.

Step 2: Record candidates instead of joining them all at once

Save display name, @username, discovery date and seed channel for each candidate. Don’t just screenshot the avatar. Usernames and discovered relationships help later identify renames, duplicates, and source networks.

Step 3: Read recent and older content

At the same time, check the content of the last week and an earlier period to determine whether the channel theme is continuous. Only viewing the latest three items may happen to encounter advertisements, top promotions or temporary events.

Step 4: Check originality and source methods

Record whether the channel publishes first-hand announcements, original analysis, aggregation with links, or unsourced transfers. The same information repeated on ten channels does not equal ten independent evidences.

Step 5: Verify external identity

Official organization channels should be able to find backlinks from the organization’s official website or other certified accounts. Telegram certification can help identify official sources, but officials also emphasize that certification is not an endorsement of every content and opinion.

Step 6: Group by tasks

Don’t put all the discovered channels in one “Telegram” folder. Divide the tasks into official announcements, industry news, research opinions, job search, activities, etc. groups, and decide which ones need to be notified and which ones can only be checked at fixed times.

Useful form to evaluate channel quality

Check items Strong signal Risk signal
Identity Official website backlink, stable username Impersonating by just avatar and name
History The theme is continuous and the timeline is reasonable Suddenly cleared or completely changed the theme
Sources Links to primary sources Unsourced screenshots and anonymous “inside information”
Update Rhythm and theme matching High-frequency copying, clickbait bombing
Business conduct Clearly state advertisements or subscriptions Guarantee earnings, urge transfers, and ask for verification codes
Corrections Actively retain corrections and context Only show successful cases after deleting errors

Ratings are just an organization tool and cannot permanently label a channel as “safe”. Accounts may change hands, links may change, and content risks may change over time.

Global search is suitable if you know the name, username or keyword; Similar Channels is suitable if you know one source but don’t know what other sources are called. You can first use global search to find a reliable seed, then use similar channel expansion, and finally use in-channel search to verify whether the candidate covers the topics you care about for a long time.

To discover public posts that contain a certain Hashtag, use Public Hashtag/Post search, not Similar Channels. One starts from the channel relationship, and the other starts from the message content.

When is it appropriate to use channels in asktele

Once you’ve found a candidate channel, observe it for a while to make sure the content is relevant to your mission, that the questions are recurring, and that you have permission to use the content. asktele can manage multiple broadcast channels, but each question only targets one selected channel; Similar Channels are only used to discover candidate sources and do not mean that products will search across channels.

How to evaluate whether “similarity” is useful in different fields

News Channel

First, distinguish between original media, institutional announcements and forwarding aggregation. Just because two channels are talking about the same event does not mean that the editorial standards are the same. Check whether the reporter or source is credited, whether corrections are issued, whether the title is consistent with the text, and consider repeated reprints of the same news agency article as a chain of sources rather than multiple independent confirmations.

Job Search Channel

Categorized by region, industry, experience level and remote mode. The channel often posts positions, which does not mean that the position is real or still open; open the recruitment link randomly to confirm whether it returns to the company’s official website, whether there is a deadline, and whether unusual advance payment is required. Lookalike audiences can only aid discovery, not replace job verification.

Finance and Trading Channel

Record whether the channel distinguishes between facts, opinions and advertisements, whether it retains failure judgments and subsequent updates, and whether it discloses interest relationships. Do not use overlapping fans or Similar Channels recommendations to prove investment capabilities, and do not regard multiple channels that reprint each other as independent market consensus.

Social, blind date and city activity channel

Focus on the rules, reporting paths, privacy requirements, event organizers and content timeliness. Similar channels may cover the same city but have completely different review intensity. Do not collect personal data in bulk or infer sensitive attributes from public posts.

Use two rounds of sampling to reduce misjudgments

In the first round, we quickly sample the last twenty or so posts to determine whether the topics match, whether they are still active, and whether the proportion of advertisements is too high. The second round draws another period from an earlier month to check whether the channel suddenly changed its name, changed its field, or was packaged as a target topic only in the near future.

Sampling is not statistical proof, but it can expose problems that cannot be discovered by just looking at the home page. Record the sampling date and range; if the channel publishes very few, it should be clear that there is “insufficient sample” and do not force scoring.

Create source combinations instead of adding unlimited channels

A practical source combination can include: primary institutional channels, professional media or editorial channels, vertical community channels, and necessary risk or counter-observation sources. Each source plays a different role, which can reduce homogeneous forwarding.

When new candidates overlap with existing channels for a long time, do not add new first-hand materials or cover unique regions, they do not need to join. The higher the number of channels, the higher the notification, deduplication and verification costs. The goal is not to collect the largest catalog but to form the smallest set of sources sufficient to answer specific questions.

Which signals to review every month?

Check whether usernames, profiles, and external links have changed; whether recent updates have been interrupted; whether advertising, paid referrals, or high-risk commitments have increased; whether source annotations have degraded; whether the original torrent channel is still reliable. When an abnormality is found, pause automatic processing first, and then check the channel history and operator instructions.

Similar Channels results may also change over time. Think of a recommendation list as a record of a discovery, not a permanent graph of relationships.

Similar Channel FAQ

Why is there no Similar Channels on the profile page?

This capability is only available for public channels, and the specific entrance and display may also be affected by the client version, account status, and current product interface. You can update the official client, or change the name, theme, and official external links to continue discovery.

Is the recommendation reliable?

It prompts candidates for overlapping audiences but does not evaluate authenticity, professionalism, safety, or content stance. Each candidate is independently verified.

Can I search all similar channel content at once?

No. The recommendation list only supports channel discovery; it does not provide a complete cross-channel research result. Native global search and asktele also have defined scopes and should be evaluated separately.
